Jamie Carragher says he would be ‘delighted’ if Liverpool signed from and Alex Mac Allister from Brighton.

Liverpool fans will be hoping for a productive summer after a very underwhelming season, with the club very likely to miss out on qualification for the first time since 2016.

’s priority will be to rebuild his midfield with James Milner, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita all set to leave on a free, while Arthur Melo’s loan will not be extended.

Various names have been linked with Anfield, most prominently Mount and Mac Allister who are expected to leave their respective clubs in the next transfer window.

Mount has just one year remaining on his contract and talks over an extension are not progressing well partly because of the turmoil at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea currently 12th in the table.

There is plenty of interest in the England international from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, while .

‘Mason Mount is a funny one, in that people always seem a little bit down on him for whatever reason. I’ve never got it, I’m a huge fan,’ Liverpool legend Carragher told .

‘He’s a Champions League winner. I really like him. He’s got energy to press, he’d provide a greater goal threat from midfield than we have from Jordan [Henderson] in that position right now.

‘Every top manager who’s been at Chelsea has picked him. He plays for England and I think the club have also got to be thinking about that homegrown situation.’

Mac Allister meanwhile has had a brilliant season with Brighton, scoring 12 goals to help the Seagulls qualify for Europe for the first time in their history and also winning the World Cup with Argentina back in December.

The 24-year-old is highly coveted and , but Carragher thinks the Reds will need more if they are to get back to the top of the table.

He added: ‘If we brought Mac Allister and Mason Mount in, I’d be delighted with that. I definitely want us to bring a defensive midfield player in as well, because Mount and Mac Allister are more offensive midfield players.

‘I don’t think our problem is going forward, our problem is defensively. If we’re gonna get back to where we wanna be, which is challenging Manchester City and challenging for big trophies, we’ve got to sort ourselves out defensively because that’s been the biggest problem this season.’
