Former and forward Carlos Tevez has been appointed as the manager of Argentinian club Rosario Central.

This marks the beginning of Tevez’s managerial career having announced his retirement from the game earlier in June.

The 38-year-old has been given a one-year contract at Rosario with the club currently 22nd out of 28 teams in the Argentine Primera Division after four games.

Upon his appointment, Tevez said: ‘I am really excited about the project I am putting together with my brothers and Chapa Retegui [his former international teammate who will be joining his coaching staff].

‘We have been working together for four or five months and we are putting together a really good, global project. I am really into this.

‘I’m going to be a coach; I made the decision that I’m going to manage. I got excited, I’m very hooked. I’m ready to manage now.’

Tevez is best remembered for his playing career in England where, after a single season with West Ham, he spent two years at Old Trafford winning two league titles and the Champions League in 2008.

He then made the controversial move to the Etihad where he would score a remarkable 73 goals in 148 games, winning the Golden Boot in 2011 and helping City to their first ever Premier League triumph in 2012.

At international level, he won Olympic Gold with Argentina in 2004 but couldn’t quite claim a major trophy finishing as runner-up in the Copa America three times.

After leaving England, Tevez would go onto have further success at Juventus, Boca Juniors and Shanghai Shenua, before returning to Boca, his boyhood club, again where winded down his career.

Tevez was without a club for the last year, and upon hanging up his boots he revealed that his retirement was motivated by the death of his adopted father Segundo Raimundo, who passed away in February 2021 after experiencing complications from COVID-19.

‘I have retired, it is confirmed,’ Tevez told Mundo Albiceleste.

‘They offered me many things, including from the United States. But that’s it, I have given everything.

‘Playing the last year was very difficult but I was able to see my old man. I stopped playing because I lost my number one fan.’
