Bruno Fernandes has opened up on his goal drought for Manchester United ahead of their Premier League encounter against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Portugal international said he 'knows people are upset' that he is not scoring goals or providing many assists as in previous seasons.

Fernandes scored 8 goals and made seven assists in 14 appearances in the 2019-20 season.

Last season, the Portuguese star contributed to 30 goals, helping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to finish second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final.

But the midfielder has only scored once since September, going 11 matches without a goal.

"I'm not scoring goals because I'm missing the goal! It's easy like that," Fernandes told Sky Sports.

"The way we played in the last two games, I've played a little deeper, yeah, but it's because we changed system and you have to adapt.

"I know people are upset because the numbers are going a little bit low. I'm never happy with myself. I want to always improve and do better.

"The team knows me better and I don't get the space I got in the beginning because I was someone coming from Portugal and most players didn't know who Bruno is.

"Now the space is a little bit short for me, the time is a little bit short and I have to improve on that to be quick on shooting and passing and everything to make my game work."

Fernandes had recently missed a stoppage time spot-kick during Man United shocking 1-0 loss to Aston Villa earlier in the season.

And a section of Manchester United fans were surprised that the Portugal international assumed the duty with Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch at the time.

The miss led to speculation that the 27-year-old would be stopped from taking penalties by the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, Fernandes later told BT Sport that he would have stepped out to take the spot-kick again if they were awarded one during their Champions League game some days later.

Manchester United have a big task ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City, their city rivals and Fernandes will hope to help Solskjaer's side defeat Pep Guardiola team.
