Manchester United assistant coach Eric Ramsay is close to leaving the club and becoming manager of MLS side Minnesota United.

The Athletic report that the deal is not yet complete, but an agreement is close and the highly-rated young coach will take on his first role as a manager.

Just 32 years old, Ramsay has already worked in the youth ranks at  and Shrewsbury Town, before moving to  in 2019.

He joined in 2021, under the reign of , and remains at Old Trafford, becoming a significant part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff since the Dutchman took charge.

His incredible rise in the game will now take him to America, where he will become the second youngest manager in MLS history, behind Roy Wegerle when he was in charge of Colorado Rapids.

Ramsay has had glowing reviews from people he has worked with, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Darren Fletcher at Manchester United, but has been praised for an unusual reason by a former colleague.

Former Hull and Bolton player Sam Ricketts studied for the UEFA Pro Licence with Ramsay and went on to work together at Shrewsbury Town.

There he realised that Ramsay had a serious weapon in his arsenal – a very loud whistle.

‘His personality is the big thing. He’s a people person. He’s a very rounded individual who won’t be fazed by anything but who will be very attentive and detail-driven in everything he does,’ said Ricketts of Ramsay.

‘I know it sounds stupid but he’s got one of one of the best whistles with his fingers I’ve heard on a training pitch and when he wants to make a point quickly it can be very effective.

‘A shepherd would be envious. Eric could control a sheep dog two fields away.

‘Some people can’t get intensity into sessions. Maybe they’re too placid, quiet, nice, but Eric can flip between the two. His whistle can be part of that. It pricks your attention.’
