United’s season hit another low point this week as Rangnick’s side were hammered 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

The result has left United three points behind and Tottenham in the race for fourth place, and both the Gunners and Spurs have played one game fewer.

Speaking after United’s defeat to Liverpool, Rangnick delivered a frank assessment of the squad and how far they are off challenging for the title.

‘We have to accept they [Liverpool] are six years ahead of us now,’ Rangnick said.

‘When came [to Liverpool in 2015] they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.’

But according to , Rangnick’s comments ‘did not go down well’ with those behind the scenes at United, who believe the club can be improved in a shorter timeframe.

Rangnick also suggested that United may need to sign up to 10 new players in order to improve the squad.

‘There will be a rebuild for sure but that does not help us when we still have five games to play,’ said Rangnick.

‘If you analyse the situation it is not difficult to analyse. For me, it is clear there will be six, seven, eight, maybe ten new players.

‘Before you sign those players you need to be aware how you want to play.’

United have since announced that Erik ten Hag will replace Rangnick as manager at the end of the season.

The Ajax head coach has signed a three-year deal with United. Meanwhile, Rangnick is set to move into a consultancy role this summer.

‘It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead,’ Ten Hag said after his move to United was announced.

‘I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

‘It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.’
