have revived their interest in Villarreal defender , just 12 months after choosing over the Spaniard.

Torres looked certain to leave his boyhood club last summer after an impressive season with ’s men, which ended in Europa League glory against Manchester United in the final.

The Spain defender has a £55m release clause in his contract and United had considered triggering it, only to move for Varane instead.

The Frenchman has suffered an injury-ravaged season at Old Trafford, while Torres has played every minute of Villarreal’s incredible run to the Champions League semi-finals, where they will play Liverpool.

United are set to allow Eric Bailly and Phil Jones to leave the club this summer, while Axel Tuanzebe is up for sale after two disappointing loan spells away from Old Trafford.

That leaves United down to three recognised centre-backs and the Manchester Evening News say Torres is now back on the club’s radar to beef up their options.

The club expect to appoint Erik ten Hag in the coming weeks and he will be consulted over any move for Torres, as well as other options in the transfer market.

United have shipped 44 goals in 32 league matches this term, which is already more than they conceded in the entirety of last season.

Ten Hag requires both of his centre-backs to be comfortable on the ball and though Torres plays in a defensive system at Villarreal, he still thrives with Spain in a more expansive set-up.
