had admitted he ‘doesn’t know’ whether he will sign a new contract and remain with Liverpool.

The 29-year-old’s current contract expires in June 2023, and unless a new agreement is reached between player and club, he will be available to leave for free.

That fact has led to speculation that the Egyptian could depart this summer instead, in order for Liverpool to receive a few for a player who has become arguably the world’s best since signing from AS Roma five years ago.

With 155 goals in 245 appearance, Salah has the greatest goalscoring rate in Liverpool’s modern history, and has become a global cultural icon since joining the Reds, including featuring on the front cover of Time magazine.

Though the player says he still does not know whether he will renew his Liverpool deal, he insists that his financial demands are not blocking a new contract.

‘I don’t know…’ he told FourFourTwo. ‘I have one year left. I think the fans know what I want, but in the contract it’s not everything about the money at all. So I don’t know, I can’t tell you exactly. I have one year left and the fans know what I want.’

‘This club means a lot to me – I’ve enjoyed my football here more than anywhere, I gave the club everything and everybody saw that. I’ve had a lot of unbelievable moments here, winning trophies, individual goals, individual trophies. It’s like a family here.’

With six weeks of the season left to play, Liverpool are aiming to complete an unprecedented quadruple by adding the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup trophies to the Carabao Cup they won in February. Salah insists he is concentrating on those objectives rather than this contract situation.

‘I’m not worried, I don’t let myself worry about something. The season didn’t finish yet, so let’s finish it in the best possible way – that’s the most important thing. Then in the last year, we’re going to see what’s going to happen.’

Despite fans’ concerns that he could leave this summer, Salah shakily insisted he will remain with Liverpool for at least one more season.

‘Yeah. Er, I think so? But if they want me to go, that’s something different!’ To play in that atmosphere and to see the fans always behind me… I have banners in the stadium, two or three, and they’re always singing my song. It’s going to be a really sad moment [when I eventually leave.]’

Liverpool face Everton at Anfield on Sunday as they try to overhaul Manchester City’s one-point advantage in the Premier League.
