Steve Harper, the long-serving former goalkeeper and current academy director of Newcastle United, suffered a stroke on Monday but is ‘awake and recovering well’ in hospital.
The Magpies confirmed that the 48-year-old suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage, a form of stroke which can be fatal.
A statement from the club read: ‘Newcastle United is sending love and best wishes to Steve Harper and his family after the club’s academy director suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage on Monday.
‘The club is pleased to report that Steve is awake and recovering well in hospital.
‘Steve, his family and everyone at Newcastle United extends a heartfelt thank you to NHS staff for the incredible care he is receiving.
‘Steve will be given the club’s full support as he recovers. Everyone connected with Newcastle United sends their best wishes to Steve and his family as he continues his recuperation.’
Harper enjoyed an epic playing career at Newcastle, with his 20-year stint at the club making him the longest serving player in Magpies history.
The goalkeeper signed in 1993 and left in 2003, initially retiring but then signing for Hull City and playing in the Premier League for the Tigers.
Harper was second choice for the vast majority of his time at Newcastle, although still made 199 appearances for the club.
