Paul Scholes believes Erik ten Hag would benefit if finish eigth in the Premier League this season, after admitting he is ‘saddened’ by how ‘unrecognisable’ his former club are now.

The Red Devils were battered 4-0 by arch rivals Liverpool on Tuesday night, which practically ended the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

Ten Hag is set to be announced as United’s new manager in the near-future, with a possible announcement coming this week.

The Dutchman has a wealth of issues to resolve at Old Trafford, namely dealing with a host of players that are out of contract and the need to sign replacements.

Much will depend on where United finish in the league but with a top four place looking unlikely, Scholes believes finishing outside the European places altogether may actually benefit Ten Hag.

‘Finish 8th and give this man the time he needs…’ said Scholes on his Instagram page.

‘Saddened by what’s happening, unrecognisable football club.’

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard will all leave the club on free transfers, while Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Dean Henderson could be sold.

Ten Hag will make decisions on whether Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial stay at the club, while it’s unclear if Diogo Dalot, Alex Telles and Amad Diallo have futures at Old Trafford.
