Former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has revealed the crucial error David de Gea made for Ilkay Gundogan’s final winner.
It seemed that De Gea saw the ball late secured the 2023 FA Cup trophy.
Gundogan did not the ball cleanly but the spinning ball evaded players in the box and flew past De Gea despite the Spaniard getting a hand on it.
Schmeichel has now talked through the error De Gea made as he shared his post-match views on the BBC.
‘I think he should have done better,’ Schmeichel said. ‘I was very surprised.
‘I look at where he is in the goal… If I put myself in there I would be thinking ‘okay, I have to right in the middle of this triangle’ (picture above) – he gets a full hand to it!
‘He’s a little bit too deep… he should move toward where the ball is.’
Alan Shearer, meanwhile, agreed with Schmeichel but also felt that Gundogan should not have been given the space to get a shot away in the first place.
‘You’ve already seen him score a scorcher [for the first goal]… I was really surprised Gundogan had enough space to get the shot away,’ Shearer said.
‘But the keeper should have done better and saved it.’
