’s strange spell at Chelsea is at an end and his father has reflected on a ‘nightmare’ time for his son with the Blues.

The forward arrived at Stamford Bridge from Barcelona in September last year, linking up with manager again after they worked together at .

The transfer largely made sense because of that connection, so when Tuchel was sacked shortly after and replaced by , things did not look great for the striker.

Aubameyang finished the season with just three goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, netting just once in the Premier League and has now moved to Marseille, where he has signed a three-year deal.

Pierre-Francois Aubameyang has reminded critics that his son has suffered off the pitch in recent times, before his move to Chelsea, which made things very difficult for him.

‘His jaw was broken by robbers at his home in Barcelona while trying to protect his wife and children,’ Pierre-Francois told .

‘At , he played with a mask at the start. It could only be a nightmare year. Now it’s over. He has a smile. He knows that I’m seeing the light again because I can walk and run since my last operation. And he’s signing for [Marseille].

‘It is a big relief after the nightmare year that he experienced.’

At 34 years old and after a forgettable stint in the Premier League, Aubameyang’s next move may not have been to a top league, with Saudi Arabia a predictable option for him.

His father says there was the option to move to the Saudi Pro League, but when Marseille came calling his son jumped at the chance.

‘There was contact with Saudi Arabia, but when [Marseille] come forward… who hasn’t dreamed of playing for this club? Especially in Africa. I keep receiving messages from back home,’ he said.
