Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia has informed Lyon that he wants to join after the Red Devils hijacked the French club’s move for the Dutchman.
The 22-year-old had agreed to join Lyon after his club accepted a £13m fee from the Ligue 1 club for the Netherlands international.
However, United were informed during negotiations for Frenkie de Jong that Malacia had agreed to join Lyon, as the defender shares an agent with the star.
United moved quickly to better Lyon’s bid and Malacia felt the offer was too good to turn down.
According to the defender informed Lyon late on Tuesday night that he no longer wants to move to the club because he intends to go to Old Trafford instead.
Frank Arnesen, Feyenoord’s Sporting Director, confirmed yesterday that the decision was in Malacia’s hands after United hijacked Lyon’s bid.
‘The agreement is there. We now await Tyrell. If he says yes then a move to United is imminent,’ said Arnesen.
Malacia could therefore become the first signing of the Erik ten Hag era, though United are hopeful of completing a deal for De Jong this week.
It brings to an end the wait United fans have had for new signings, with supporters growing increasingly impatient in recent weeks as rivals Liverpool and Manchester City made significant additions to their squads.
