Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist has urged Jesse Lingard to leave and move to in the summer.
The attacking midfielder’s contract at Old Trafford is up at the end of the season and the 29-year-old is expected to finally leave his boyhood club after several years of transfer speculation.
Lingard broke through into the United first team under Louis van Gaal and remained a regular under , winning the , EFL Cup and Europa League with the Red Devils.
However, over the past few seasons he has become a fringe player at the club, but the England international has proven in the past that he still has the talent to play for a top Premier League side.
He spent the last half of the 2020/21 season on loan at West Ham, scoring nine and assisting five in just 16 games, helping the Irons to an unprecedented sixth-place finish and nearly forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for last summer’s Euros.
‘Jesse Lingard, please go out there and start playing football. It’s what we want to see, it’s what you want to do, it’s what you need to do,’ McCoist told .
‘We saw your talent when you played for Moyesy [David Moyes] at West Ham. That’s what you’ve got to do mate, you need to get back to playing for yourself.
‘A move to somewhere like Newcastle, a team that are on the up and are going places, I really do think it makes sense. I think it’d be a great move for both parties.
‘West ham would be great obviously as well.’
Lingard reportedly came close to joining the Magpies in January only for United to block the transfer, and he could yet stay in Manchester if he features in incoming manager Erik ten Hag’s plans.
