David de Gea is back in Manchester amid ongoing speculation surrounding his club future.
The 32-year-old ended his 12-year stay at Old Trafford at the end of June, leaving at the end of his contract after failing to agree terms on a new deal.
De Gea had been close to signing a new contract towards the end of last season on reduced terms only for United to withdraw their offer –
The Spaniard has been a free agent ever since with his replacement
The Cameroon international was at fault in United’s last two games, making errors in the Champions League defeat to Galatasaray and conceding a soft opener against Brentford on Saturday before Scott McTominay rescued a late win.
With Onana under pressure, de Gea sparked speculation by revealing he is back in the city on Tuesday with a post on Instagram.
But according to the , de Gea is back in town just for a few days, making arrangements for the house in Hale where he lived as United’s no1.
Reports in the summer claimed de Gea rejected a move to Inter Milan while he was also linked with a move to Bayern Munich. It was also claimed last month the former Spain international was considering retirement.
De Gea is thought to be relaxed over his future and is enjoying his time away from the game with his family, having married his long-term partner Edurne Garcia in the summer.
The former Atletico Madrid youngster is not rushing to find a club, but that situation could change in the New Year.
Meanwhile, de Gea’s former United teammate Rio Ferdinand has compared Onana’s start to life at United to that of the Spaniard, who had his rocky moments following his arrival in 2011.
‘At the moment, there are nerves that are in there, because of the mistakes,’ Ferdinand said. ‘A lot of people are asking if he can recover. I was there when De Gea came. He was obviously younger but he didn’t start well, you know. I think in his first 10 games or so, the numbers are similar to Onana.
‘If you were to speak to Onana himself, I think he would say, ‘This is not the start I wanted, this is no way near the level I am used to performing at and this is not the standard required at Man Utd so I need to buck up my ideas’.
