Lucas Torreira is set to return to Arsenal after Fiorentina reduced their offer to keep the midfielder for another season.

The Uruguay international has spent the campaign on loan in Serie A and has played a key role in Fiorentina’s side.

The Italian club are keen to keep Torreira, who was signed by Arsenal for £26 million in 2018, on a permanent deal.

But the midfielder’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, has revealed that Arsenal have turned down Fiorentina’s attempt to lower the €15m (£12.6m) right-to-buy option.

‘The basic problem is that Lucas earned a higher salary at Arsenal than he took in Florence,’ Bentancur told FiorentinaNews.com.

‘When we agreed on the €1.5m (£1.2m) loan with Arsenal last summer, I got from the English club the possibility that Fiorentina would not pay that money if Lucas had played at least 25 games. With this option we have set the right of redemption at €15m (£12.6m), payable in six instalments of €2.5m (£2.1m) by 2025.

‘We had agreed on an engagement with Fiorentina for the coming seasons of €2.7m (£2.2m) net a year.

‘Fiorentina, however, now want to lower both the salary and the cost of the transfer. We couldn’t accept us and Arsenal didn’t accept it either. Now Lucas has a contract with Arsenal until June 30, 2023.

‘Lucas loves the city of Florence. He is very disappointed, there is little to add.

‘Disappointed by the behaviour of the club obviously, not for the football experience or the city, I repeat, he fell in love with Florence.’
