EA denies Battlefield 2042 is in ‘abandon ship’ mode – promises three more seasons

Reports that only a ‘skeleton crew’ are working on Battlefield 2042 have been refuted by EA, who claim multiple studios are still involved.

There have been rumours for months already that EA is working on a , after the disastrous launch of Battlefield 2042 last year, and now new claims suggest that only a ‘skeleton crew’ at DICE are left working on 2042.

EA has previously committed itself to at least four seasons of new content, with beginning earlier this month. There’s no suggestion they won’t deliver that but a new source claims that EA intends to make it in the ‘fastest and cheapest’ way possible.

Normally publishers don’t comment on such rumours, but EA has issued a statement insisting that that’s ‘untrue’ and that there’s a ‘significant team at DICE, alongside our other studios, focused on evolving and improving the Battlefield 2042 experience.’

There have been few rumours as to what the new Battlefield might be, other than it will have a near future setting rather than a historical one.

Battlefield 2042 was originally meant to be a return to form for the series, after disappointment over Battlefield 5, but 2042’s player numbers on PC quickly fell .

According to him, ‘the real core crew of Battlefield developers are already working on [the new game]’ and everyone else is being moved onto it ‘as fast as possible’.

Grubb characterises the situation as ‘abandon ship time’ and whether true or not raises the question of what publishers do when games that are intended to be long-lasting live service titles turn out to be a flop.

Square Enix has suffered a similar problem recently, with the even less successful Babylon’s Fall, which they’ve continued to promise new support for despite the fact that .
